transformative justice project

narrative
Across 2025, the organizations SpiritHouse South and Forward Justice were able to receive ARPA funding for the whole year. We crafted a visual identity and set of events to communicate resources for underfunded Black and immigrant communities in Durham. The identity’s goal is to express events of rest, civic education, and celebration in places where these events are neglected.
Visual research was done with a focus on merging 2 organizations with very different branding and goals: SpiritHouse South as a cultural arts organization, and Forward Justice as a legal rights organization. Both were co-organizing events and weaving the narratives together. Along with searching for combining two visual languages, design was researched to give distinction to 3 categories of ARPA-funded events: Neighborhood Engagement, Arts & Culture, and Civic Education.

Visual solutions were given by first simplifying and abstracting the SpiritHouse’s depiction of the Great Mosque of Djenne as their logo with Forward Justice’s star and public policy-driven color schemes. A visual logic was created for each category: • Building block tesellations for neighborhood engagement • Fabric patterns for arts & culture • Bold circular geometry for civic education This project culminated to For the Culture Week, a week of programming spanning each event category and education in Durham.
